Web Standards and Why you should care

You hand over your project to the design agency and it's designed as you've briefed them. Everything seems nice from the outside, but underneath it, is your website developed with web standards in mind?

Web Standards in a nutshell

Basically it is a set of guidelines that allow your website to a) load faster, b) be better indexed by search engines such as Google and Yahoo!, and c) be extendable when extra features are needed.

Faster Loading Time

If your website is developed with older methods-which, sadly, some companies are still doing-your website is plagued with unneccesary codes. What this means is that everytime someone visits your site, they're downloading these extra bit of information. These extra bits of code slows down the time it takes to view your website and most people don't like to wait. So naturally, by streamlining the codes, less information gets downloaded and it translate to faster loading time. And it keeps your visitors happy.

Search Engine

Your ranking on the search engines depend on various factors, and one of them is how your code is structured. If your website is standards-compliant, it helps the search engine to "see" your website, resulting in better ranking.

Extendibility

Adhering to standards allow future developers of your website to edit them faster, thus resulting in shorter development time. If you pass a document written in german to a french, they will have to spend that much time trying to decipher it, but if it's written in a more common language, say english, then it's easier-and faster-for another to work on it.
